Portuguese equities and bonds tumbled on Friday, forcing the European Central Bank to intervene to steady the markets as investor fears rose about the ability of Lisbon to fund its public debt.
The Portuguese markets also came under pressure as the Swiss National Bank confirmed that it had stopped accepting Portuguese government securities as collateral for repurchase (repo) agreements, adding Greece and Ireland among the eurozone governments on its ineligible list. The decision to exclude both countries follows steep downgrades of Portuguese and Irish debt.
